Taken on December 13, 1916, this glass negative shows the U.S.S. Pennsylvania, a battleship the Navy had only recently commissioned. The Pennsylvania was one of the large, heavily armed battleships built for the fleet in the years before the United States entered World War I. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm known for documenting government and military subjects, made the picture on a glass plate, and the streaks and blemishes visible today come from natural deterioration of the original coating.
