The U.S.S. Connecticut, a battleship commissioned in 1906, later sailed with the Great White Fleet on its voyage around the world from 1907 to 1909. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented American life in the early twentieth century, made this picture on a glass negative. The title comes from the company's own notes and has not been independently verified. Glass negatives of this period are prone to streaks and surface blemishes as their coatings deteriorate, so the faint marks across the image reflect the plate's age as much as the photograph itself.
