Pickwick Stages, a motor coach line that carried passengers between cities in California and the West, is the company behind this double-decker bus. Double-decker coaches were an unusual sight on American highways in the years between the wars, when intercity travel by road was growing quickly. This picture comes from the National Photo Company collection, a commercial studio whose work documents daily life and transportation in the early twentieth century. The negative is a 1947 copy made on safety film, and its streaks and blemishes reflect the aging of the original coatings.
