A fallen giant sequoia stretches across the frame, with men and horses posed beside its massive trunk to show its scale. Such photographs were popular in the late 1800s, when Yosemite's groves drew travelers who came by horseback and stagecoach and wanted proof of trees far larger than anything they knew. Fallen trunks like this one were often measured, hollowed, or turned into tourist attractions, which made them a striking subject for panoramic views. The wide format lets the viewer take in both the tree's length and the small human figures against it.
