Belka and Strelka, the two dogs named in the title, flew aboard the Soviet Sputnik 5 capsule in August 1960 and were recovered alive after about a day in orbit. Their safe return mattered because it showed that a living animal could survive launch, weightlessness and reentry, a question that had to be answered before people could fly. The photograph is credited to S. Preobrazhensky and N. Sitnikov and was printed in the Soviet Union, where the mission was presented as a national achievement.
