A trained-dog act is the subject of this 1900 poster, which advertises "the marvelous foot-ball dogs" as part of the Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth. The Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York printed it, and the firm was one of the leading American makers of colorful circus posters at the time. Such posters were pasted on walls and billboards in towns along the circus's route to draw crowds, and animal acts like this one were a major draw. The image shows how circus advertising used bright color and dramatic action to promote its performers.
