Three prominent men share the frame in this 1899 print: President William McKinley, Admiral George Dewey, and Cardinal James Gibbons, one of the most influential Catholic churchmen in the United States. Dewey had become a national hero after his squadron defeated the Spanish fleet at Manila Bay in 1898, so seeing him beside the president at a religious ceremony in the capital shows how closely the public followed the celebrated figures of the recent war. The photograph was issued under the copyright of William H. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer who documented many portraits and public occasions of the period.
