A Boston merchant best known for the department store his family built, Edward A. Filene is shown here in a June 1929 Washington press portrait, when newspapers reported he might be named the next secretary of labor. He never took the post. President Herbert Hoover chose William N. Doak in 1930. Filene was a known advocate of profit sharing and cooperative credit unions, which explains why labor policy was part of the speculation. The Underwood & Underwood agency specialized in news and portrait photographs of public figures in the capital.
