Two children sit side by side on a bench in Greenbelt, Maryland, bent over a book in this July 1946 photograph. Greenbelt was one of the planned "greenbelt" towns that the federal government began building in the late 1930s as a model of community living, with houses clustered around shared open spaces and walkways. Pictures like this one were often made by housing officials to document daily life in these developments, so the scene reflects the wholesome, neighborly image the planners hoped to promote. The reading children also show how postwar family life was often pictured in public housing records.
