*Bruce's Specimen Book* is a catalog of typefaces, the kind of volume a printer would page through to compare letterforms and sizes before ordering metal type. The record dates it to about 1890, when American printing was expanding quickly to meet the demands of newspapers, magazines and commercial advertising. Specimen books like this one served as both working tools and showpieces, with sample lines set in each face so buyers could judge weight, width and style at a glance. The Library of Congress keeps it in its Prints and Photographs Division, which holds printed material alongside pictures.
