A teacher stands at a lectern with an open book in this woodcut, which was made to illustrate *La Mer des Hystoires*, a richly illustrated world history printed in France in the late 1400s. The picture belongs to the early days of printing, when movable type was new and woodcut images were often carved to accompany the text. The caption card gives no date, so the exact origin is uncertain, but the scene of a scholar reading aloud reflects a time when books were shifting from hand-copied manuscripts to printed editions.
