Betsy Ross sits at her worktable with a flag across her lap, the scene this 1932 color halftone reproduces from a painting by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris. Ferris, who died in 1930, was known for historical scenes of colonial and Revolutionary America, and he depicts the 1777 moment that the familiar legend credits with the first American flag. That story rests largely on a claim her grandson William J. Canby made in 1870, and historians have never confirmed it. The Cleveland publisher's print appeared during the 1932 bicentennial of Washington's birth, when patriotic images like this circulated widely.
