Taken near Westover, Arkansas, this print shows a levee during the high water of spring 1927, when the Mississippi and its tributaries rose to record levels. The album it belongs to bears the note "Helena gage 56.7 ft.," a reading from the river gauge at Helena, a few miles downstream, that gives a sense of how far the water had climbed. The 1927 flood was one of the most destructive in the river's history, and the Arkansas delta levees were under constant strain. The print is a useful record of the earthen barriers that the surrounding farmland depended on.
