The eastern portal of a tunnel gives this view its focus, a dark opening cut into the hillside. It comes from a photograph album by Jedediah Hotchkiss, the Staunton, Virginia, mapmaker who worked as a Confederate topographer during the Civil War, and it documents routes running from near Staunton toward Huntington, West Virginia. In 1872 railroads were being pushed through rugged Appalachian country, so views like this recorded both the engineering and the mountain landscape around it. The albumen print shows the soft tonal range typical of photographs from the 1870s.
