Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, in 1889 was a crowded anthracite mining borough in Schuylkill County, where nearly every family's income depended on the collieries and breakers that ringed the town. The Philadelphia and Reading Railroad and its coal subsidiaries shaped daily life, setting wages, hauling coal to market, and drawing in Irish, Welsh, German, and newer Slavic and Lithuanian workers who filled the streets and boarding houses. The region's labor struggles were still fresh in local memory; the Molly Maguire trials at Pottsville in 1876 and 1877 had turned the coalfields into a national story. A bird's-eye view like this one would have shown residents the churches, schools, and rows of company-era housing that they measured their lives against.
