Taken from the deck of the U.S. Navy steam sloop Pawnee, this view shows the artillery the ship carried while on duty off Charleston, South Carolina. The city was a central target of Union naval operations, and it was where the war began with the shelling of Fort Sumter in April 1861, so warships stationed offshore were a constant presence there. The photograph dates from between 1861 and 1865 but was printed later, and it appeared in Miller's Photographic History of the Civil War, a multivolume compilation published around 1911 that gathered wartime images for later readers.
