Doylestown, the county seat of Bucks County in southeastern Pennsylvania, is the place named on this 1880 poster, a notice for a sheriff's sale of real estate printed by the Bucks County Intelligencer. Sheriff's sales were public auctions of property seized to settle unpaid debts or court judgments, and they were usually advertised in advance in the county seat and nearby towns. Notices like this one were meant to be read on courthouse doors, in shop windows, and along main streets, which shows how local legal business was announced before newspapers and radio reached every household.
