Hallstead, in Susquehanna County in northeastern Pennsylvania, sat on the Susquehanna River in 1887, a community whose fortunes followed the river and the railroad that ran beside it. The Erie Railroad's line through the valley carried freight and passengers, and the surrounding farms supplied dairy products, grain, and timber to markets downstate. Like many small river towns of the region, Hallstead depended on a mix of rail traffic, local trade, and the logging and tanning industries that had long shaped the hills of the northern tier. Its residents would have known the place as a quiet working town, where churches, schools, and the depot formed the center of daily life. The map shows a settlement at a moment when the railroad and river still set the pace of its economy.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Hallstead, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1887. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
