In 1887 Great Bend was a small river town in Susquehanna County, in northeastern Pennsylvania, where the Susquehanna makes the sharp turn that gave the place its name. The Erie Railroad's main line ran through the borough, and its rail yards and shops tied the town's fortunes to through traffic as much as to the farms in the surrounding hills. Dairying, timber cut from the county's slopes, and trade along the river supported local families, and the railroad carried their goods and brought newcomers and freight in return. Residents would have known Great Bend as a railroad stop on the river, a place where the trains and the Susquehanna, which could rise sharply in spring, shaped everyday life.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Great Bend, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1887. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
