Ephrata, in Lancaster County's Cocalico Valley, had grown up around the Ephrata Cloister, the German religious community founded by Conrad Beissel in 1732, whose half-timbered buildings still stood near the town in 1887. By then the borough served as a market and trade center for surrounding farms worked largely by Pennsylvania German families, and its economy rested on agriculture, local commerce, and small mills and shops along the Cocalico Creek. A rail line linked the town to Lancaster and the wider markets of eastern Pennsylvania. Church, school, and market day set the rhythm of daily life, and this map records the streets and business blocks as they stood before the automobile and newer factories changed the town.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1887. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
