Emlenton, a borough in Venango County in western Pennsylvania, sat on the Allegheny River in 1897, a few decades after the oil boom began nearby at Titusville in 1859. Like many river towns in the region, it lived off the traffic that moved along the water, including oil, lumber, and freight, and its residents depended on the steady work that the oil fields and related trades created. The bird's-eye view of 1897 shows the town's streets, houses, and churches spread along the riverbank and the slopes behind it. For the people who lived there, the town was a place defined by the river and by the wider Pennsylvania oil country that shaped its economy and its growth.
