Duquesne, Pennsylvania, in 1897 was a young steel town on the Monongahela River, about 15 miles upriver from Pittsburgh. Its growth rested on the Duquesne Steel Works and the nearby Carnegie interests, which drew thousands of mill hands, many of them immigrants from Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, and Italy, into a crowded grid of company-era houses climbing the hillsides. The river carried barges and coal, while rail lines along the bottoms moved ore, coke, and finished iron out of the valley. Residents would have known the town as one of the Mon Valley's fast-rising mill communities, where the whistles of the works set the daily schedule and the rhythm of civic life.
