Connellsville, a river town on the Youghiogheny in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, sat at the center of the Connellsville coke region in 1897. Its economy rested on bituminous coal baked into coke in long rows of beehive ovens, which supplied the blast furnaces of Pittsburgh and the steel mills along the Monongahela. Railroad lines carried the coke out and brought miners and laborers in, many of them recent immigrants from eastern and southern Europe who lived in company housing close to the works. Residents would have known the town by the glow of those ovens at night and by the labor disputes that periodically shut them down.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Connellsville, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1897. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
