Elizabeth, a river borough on the Monongahela about fifteen miles south of Pittsburgh in Allegheny County, is the subject of this 1897 bird's-eye view. In the 1890s the town sat in the heart of a valley economy built on coal mining in the surrounding hills, iron and steel works, and barge and steamboat traffic on the river. The depression of 1893 had left many mill and mine families short of work, and the violent Homestead strike of 1892, a few miles upriver, was still fresh in local memory. Residents would have known Elizabeth as a working community where the river, the rail lines, and the mills set the rhythm of daily life. The street-by-street detail in the map records the houses, churches, and business blocks of that world just before the twentieth century.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1897. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
