Way Down East" was a stage melodrama, and this 1897 lithograph bills it as "a story about plain people," promising the rural sentiment audiences expected. Lottie Blair Parker wrote the play, which toured American theaters for decades and became one of the most durable melodramas of its era. Its best-known sequence, a rescue on an ice floe in a snowy river, drew audiences who came for romance and peril alike. The Strobridge Lithograph Company, based in Cincinnati and New York, produced many posters like this one to advertise touring shows, and it shows how commercial color printing was used to sell theater in the 1890s.
