The title turns on a pun, "weigh" for "way," and that wordplay is the first thing to notice. Comic valentines like this one were popular in the Victorian period, when printers produced sentimental and teasing cards in large numbers for sending on February 14. Many traded on jokes about courtship, marriage and whether a sweetheart was worth the trouble. Cards of this kind show how Victorians mixed affection with lighthearted ribbing about romance.
