Baltusrol, the club in Springfield Township, New Jersey, hosted the U.S. Open in 1903 and became one of the country's major venues for championship golf. This glass negative, catalogued by the Bain News Service as a match scene, shows spectators gathered around the players, a reminder that early tournament golf drew crowds much as other sporting events did. Bain's New York agency supplied newspapers with pictures like this one, so the negative shows how the game was presented to a wide reading public around 1908. The title and date come from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion is worth confirming.
