Its slogan, "Lee libros anarquistas y serás un hombre" ("Read anarchist books and you will be a man"), sets it apart from the many Civil War posters that call for soldiers or workers to fight. Printed by the Partido Anarquista between 1936 and 1939, it is numbered 155 in the Carteles de la República series and signed "Cimine" in the upper right corner. Lithographs like this were pasted on walls during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republic was fighting the Nationalist uprising and many working people had little formal schooling. Anarchist groups, strong in parts of Spain, treated reading as a route to political awareness, and the poster's pairing of books and eyes makes that argument directly.
