The headline sets the Republic's work of building against fascism's work of destruction, and the Alarcón reservoir on the Júcar River in Cuenca province stands for the first. The dam was a major irrigation and hydroelectric project, the kind of public works the Republican government promoted as evidence of what a democratic state could build. The poster was printed in Spain between 1936 and 1939, when the war turned every such message into a claim about which side deserved the country's future. The slogan carries much of the argument, so it is worth reading the text closely alongside the image.
