Few views in the Centennial series show a railroad crossing as quietly as this one, where a bridge spans the Wissahickon Creek inside Fairmount Park. Published in 1876, the year Philadelphia hosted the Centennial Exhibition, the card came from A. H. Hemple's set of park and city views. Stereo cards like this were sold to visitors who wanted a memento of the city, and seen through a stereoscope they gave the wooded creek a striking sense of depth. The Wissahickon valley was already a favorite retreat for Philadelphians, so the picture records a place where rail lines and wilderness met.
