A trench built inside the Prater, Vienna's great park and amusement ground, is an unusual subject for a wall poster, and this 1918 color lithograph by Franz Wacik presents the front line as public entertainment. The catalog's subject headings also point to historical reenactments and Austrian warships, so the display seems to have combined several kinds of war spectacle. By 1918 the Habsburg monarchy was nearing the end of a war that had strained its population, and events like this brought the fighting to civilians, often to support the war effort. The poster is a useful record of how the home front was invited to share in the war as a form of leisure.
