Lit only by the glow of its own fire, a spoked metal wheel sits at the center of this dim workshop, with flames licking up around its rim. Railroad shops of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries relied on this kind of work: wheels, axles and other iron parts were heated, bent, shrunk onto axles, or stripped of old material, and the open flame made it hard to get a clear view of the scene. Photographers working in such shops often had to contend with the glare of fire against deep shadow, which is why the wheel's spokes stand out so sharply here.
