Rail cars loaded with iron ore and coke are the subject here, a detail that ties this stereograph to the heavy freight traffic that fed Pittsburgh's steel mills in the early 1900s. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued the card around 1905 as one of many stereoscopic views sold for parlor viewers, which paired two nearly identical exposures to create a sense of depth. Pittsburgh's rivers, rail yards and furnaces made it the center of American iron and steel production at the time, and the coke ovens that turned coal into the fuel for blast furnaces were a major part of that work. The scene offers a useful record of the industrial freight system behind the city's growth.
