This picture documents a claim made in its own caption: that a large electric locomotive was about to run through the Pennsylvania Railroad's tube into New York City. The tunnel was one of the North River tunnels, bored under the Hudson River to carry trains into Pennsylvania Station, which opened in 1910 as the railroad's Manhattan terminal. Electric power was central to that project, because steam locomotives were impractical in long tunnels. Railroad publicity of the period often compared locomotives by size or power in ways that were hard to verify, so the superlative is worth reading with some caution.
