Daniel Gregory Mason, the American composer and critic who taught music at Columbia University for decades, is the subject of this photograph of a sculpted bust. He was a grandson of the hymn composer Lowell Mason, and he wrote symphonies, chamber works, and books on music appreciation. He was also an active voice in early twentieth-century debates over what American music should be. The record dates the print to 1938 and files it with the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division under a Freemasons heading. The record does not name the sculptor or the occasion for the bust.
