Unlike the other views on this board, this print shows an exhibit panel, a display board meant to be read by viewers rather than a scene of people at work. It belongs to a group of photographs by Lewis Hine, made for the National Child Labor Committee, and its album caption, "Tenement homework," points to the home-based piecework that many families did in crowded city apartments. The caption card records no location or date, so the 1913 date is an estimate drawn from neighboring photographs in the same series. Hine and the committee used such displays to make the problems of child labor visible to audiences who would never see the workplaces themselves.
