The title, "Flocking for Freedom," suggests a flock of women taking wing, and the record ties the print to the January 23, 1878, issue of *Puck*, the New York satirical weekly. Joseph Keppler, who founded *Puck* and drew much of its political cartooning, used caricature to comment on the women's suffrage debate, a fight that had run for decades without any national voting right for women. Color lithographs like this one were a major draw for the magazine's readers, who relied on its pages for pointed commentary on politics and public life.
