The Kentucky theater on Main Street in Lexington is the subject of this ink drawing, which shows the building as it stood in 1934, during the Great Depression, when movie palaces were still among the most ornate structures on their blocks. The Library of Congress holds it in its Architecture, Design and Engineering drawings, a collection of plans and elevations of commercial and civic buildings. Facades and marquees from this era were designed to draw crowds to the street, so the drawing preserves how a local picture house presented itself to passersby. Its subject sets it apart from the many theater images that cover the same era.
