The Walnut theater stood on Walnut Street near Fourth Street in downtown Louisville, and this ink drawing records the building as it was designed in 1934. Architectural and engineering drawings like this one were made to document the plan and construction of a building, so they show the layout, proportions, and decisions of the architect rather than the atmosphere of a night at the movies. Louisville's downtown theaters of the 1930s were central to the city's entertainment life during the Depression, when going to the pictures was among the cheapest ways to spend an evening. The subject tags mark it as a motion picture theater, a reminder of how quickly the film houses of that decade reshaped American main streets.
