Few things mark a Hackensack street quite like a movie house, and this 1932 ink drawing records the Fox theater on Main Street as a set of architectural working plans rather than a photograph. Drawings of this kind were made to guide construction and were filed with the Library of Congress's Architecture, Design and Engineering collection, which holds plans of buildings from many eras. The period matters: the early 1930s were the height of the movie palace boom, when studios such as Fox built large theaters in towns across the country. Because the drawing is in ink on paper, its linework shows the design decisions an architect made before any brick was laid.
