The Strand theater stood on Main Street near Swan Street in Buffalo, New York, and this ink drawing records it as a working piece of architecture rather than a snapshot of a crowd or a marquee. The record dates it to about 1925, a decade when movie palaces were spreading through American cities and theater design was becoming a showcase for architects and their clients. Buffalo's downtown theaters of the 1920s were built to draw large audiences for both films and live performance, and drawings like this one document the building's intended form, from its street front to its interior arrangement. The Library of Congress holds it in the Prints and Photographs Division, where it is catalogued with other architectural drawings of Buffalo theaters from the same decade.
