The Ulster and Delaware Railroad was among the most important lines in the Catskills, carrying summer visitors from the Hudson Valley into the mountains and hauling bluestone, tanbark, and lumber back down. Financed in large part by Kingston's Thomas Cornell and built in the early 1870s, the line helped turn remote valleys into resort country, with hotels and boarding houses rising along its route. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American railroads and scenery for commercial sale around 1900, made this view, though the caption card gives no date.
