Its French title, *Pressant appel à la solidarité* ("Urgent call for solidarity"), sets the tone: a 1917 appeal from the French Red Cross, the Croix-Rouge française, that asks the public to support nurses and the refugees displaced by the fighting. Louis Tinayre, a painter and illustrator, designed it as a large sepia-and-red lithograph meant for public walls, where its emotional appeal could reach passersby. By 1917 the war had uprooted large numbers of civilians in northern and eastern France, and voluntary relief work had become a national effort. Posters like this one were a main way to recruit donors and volunteers.
