Jean-Louis Forain, a French painter known for his sharp drawings of Parisian life, signed this 1917 lithograph, which asks the public to support clothing for French soldiers held as prisoners of war. The title, *Le vêtement du prisonnier de guerre*, and the red lettering tie the appeal to a fund affiliated with the French Red Cross. By then, hundreds of thousands of French soldiers had been captured, and relief societies depended on donations to send garments and other necessities to men who often lacked adequate winter clothing. Posters like this one turned that everyday charity into an image meant to reach ordinary viewers at home.
