Captioned as the *M.V. Roundaltzoff* and dated February 9, 1923, this glass negative carries a caption that the National Photo Company wrote on its negatives or sleeves, and the Library of Congress has not independently verified it. The "M.V." prefix conventionally marks a motor vessel, so the subject may be a ship, though the record does not confirm that. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio active from the early 1900s into the 1940s, produced large numbers of news and documentary images. Herbert A. French gave this negative to the Library in 1947. Its streaks and blemishes come from natural deterioration of the original emulsion coatings.
