A bust portrait of Emlen Cresson, who lived from 1811 to 1889, this quarter-plate daguerreotype is dated 1853 and shows him turned slightly to the left. The rainbow-tinted backdrop was a popular finishing touch in the early 1850s, when studios hand-colored plates to add tones the silvery process could not otherwise produce. The image sits in a plain leather-grain case, and a paper label bearing his name and the date is attached to the cover glass, which helps identify the sitter. Daguerreotypes like this are unique objects, and the picture is visible only at certain angles against the mirror-bright silver surface.
