A seated, three-quarter length daguerreotype of Mary Todd Lincoln, dated around 1846, shows her a few years after her 1842 marriage to Abraham Lincoln. She faces the camera directly, a pose that was typical of portraits made during the early years of photography, when sitters often had to hold still for long exposures. The photographer is possibly Nicholas H. Shepherd. The plate passed through the family before Mary Lincoln Isham gave it to the Library of Congress in 1937. Because a daguerreotype is a unique image on a silvered copper plate, this is the only original of the picture.
