Mathew Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries in New York produced some of the most widely circulated images of Abraham Lincoln, and this carte de visite, dated January 8, 1864, carries its imprint. Cartes de visite were small mounted prints, about the size of a calling card, sold in quantity and kept in albums, which made them the most common way Americans during the Civil War owned pictures of public figures. This albumen print, made by coating paper with egg white to hold the image, shows Lincoln partway through his presidency, months before he would stand for reelection later that year.
