This quarter plate daguerreotype shows Mary Todd Lincoln seated and facing the camera, a portrait from the first years of her marriage. It is usually dated to about 1846, the year Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress, and the photographer is possibly Nicholas H. Shepherd, though that attribution is uncertain. Daguerreotypes were made as direct positives on silver-coated copper, so the image is sharpest when tilted in the light and appears reversed left to right. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1937 gift from Mary Lincoln Isham, a granddaughter of the Lincolns.
