This poster asks for 500 bakers and 100 cooks outright, and promises that men who cannot bake will be taught in a government school. Printed in New York around 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, it reflects the Army's need to feed large numbers of troops. Its folksy line about Uncle Sam makes the appeal friendly, while the printed notice names a specific recruiting office at 39th Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan.
